3rd-4th Grade Math Club Launched – with contributions by Kelly Scholten

In early December, interested 3rd and 4th graders arrived to a packed room for our first lunchtime meeting of 3/4 Math Club! After playing an all-group warm-up game based on strategizing placement of rolled dice using probability  to stay on the board longest (Dice Bonanza), students selected from three stations labeled “mild, medium, or spicy.” Students in our 3/4 Math Club are opting to spend their Monday lunchtimes playing a variety of strategy, probability, computation, and spatial reasoning games, building math community with peers across their pod, and pursuing challenges independently or with friends all aimed at spreading math joy. Hot 100, a Logic Puzzle, and a variation on Sudoku were featured stations at our first meeting, along with the opportunity to practice problems from past years’ International Math Kangaroo Competition. Over 20 students from Math Club have opted to register for this timed, Elementary through High School-aged Math challenge in April, and will use a portion of their club time to practice for the event.
