What strikes you most about the students at Hillbrook?
Hillbrook students are diverse and have an incredible range of personalities, perspectives, and interests. I love that every day I learn something new from them or about them. They are the reason I come to work every day!
When you think about the students at Hillbrook, what’s the one thing that stands out to you?
Students at Hillbrook are really comfortable with adults and are willing to speak to visitors, present to their class, lead tours, and participate in panels. I think Hillbrook does an excellent job of providing students multiple opportunities to communicate with their peers and adults on a regular basis in a variety of settings.
What is your favorite unit or project and why?
Working on choreography for the annual 8th grade musical is fun, challenging, hilarious, and inspiring. It is a great outlet that provides me with different work than my usual responsibilities. I love working on the 8th grade musical because I see students’ skills and personalities in a different light than in the academic classroom. I think it is a powerful way to bring the class together and I feel fortunate to be a part of it. This year we are doing Shrek, Jr. I have already had many laughs with students as we work on the choreography for “What’s Up, Duloc?” and “Morning Person.” I appreciate when the students speak up and offer ideas for a particular scene or musical number, making the process truly collaborative.
What made you choose to teach at Hillbrook?
I have always enjoyed working and playing with children. Early in my career, an opportunity became available to use my Spanish skills to teach students at Hillbrook, and I jumped on it. Now I have different responsibilities, but the common thread is that I still get to work with students and families which is extremely fulfilling.
What are you most looking forward to at Hillbrook in the next few months?
This is a special year because my older son Weber will be graduating 8th grade. It makes the musical, the recognition ceremony, and graduation even more meaningful to be participating in them as both a faculty member and a parent.
What is the last place book you read?
I just finished reading Blind Spot for professional development. However, I have gotten into the habit of reading half of a book and then moving on to another book. Right now I have three unread or half-finished books on my nightstand: Prep, Barkskin, and The Joy of Missing Out.
We hope you enjoyed learning more about Ms. Maisel and her extra-special connection to the Hillbrook community this year!
