This #TeacherTuesday, we are featuring Casey Chon, 5th Grade Resident Teacher. Fun fact: Ms. Chon recently chaperoned our students on the 5th Grade Marin Headlands trip!
What made you choose to come to Hillbrook to teach?
I became interested in teaching at Hillbrook when I stumbled upon its resident teacher program on Google. I was living in Boston at the time and finishing graduate school. When I came on campus for the interview, Ilsa [Dohmen, Director of Teaching & Learning] pointed out that Hillbrook has no hallways. Now, “no hallways” may be an unconventional reason to be pointing out, but if you think about the kind of environment that it provides for the students, being organized in pods and having open spaces provides for a less condensed space, which is great for kids.
I fell in love with the space itself.
It’s your first year at Hillbrook: What do you love most about your Hillbrook experience so far?
The amount of resources dedicated to furthering the professional development of all faculty and staff is astounding. I’m amazed by the opportunities provided to me, and the ones I can seek out to provide a better educational experience for the students that I teach.
What are you most looking forward to at Hillbrook in the next few months?
I am attending the People of Color Conference in Seattle – and I attended the concurrent student diversity leadership conference when I was a student. I’m so excited for this opportunity to learn, network, and be in a space with other educators of color.
What is the last place you visited?
Over the summer, I went on a road trip to Los Angeles with my partner. The beaches and the piers were great to explore.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know Ms. Chon!
